Workshop Internacional

International Workshop on Research Reactor Utilization: 50 Years of Safe and Sustainable Operation of the IEA-R1 Research Reactor

São Paulo, Brazil
3-6 December 2007

New Registration Deadline: 23 November 2007

Organized by the

Research Reactor Centre,
Instituto de Pesquisas Energéticas e Nucleares (IPEN-CNEN/SP)

Financial Support:

Instituto de Pesquisas Energéticas e Nucleares (IPEN-CNEN/SP)
Comissão Nacional de Energia Nuclear (CNEN)

Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)

1. Background:

The Brazilian research reactor IEA-R1 at IPEN, São Paulo, is being used for basic and applied research and for the production of radioisotopes for medical and industrial applications. The reactor is also used for providing services of neutron activation analysis, real time neutron radiography, and neutron transmutation doping of silicon. IEA-R1 is the largest power research reactor in Brazil, with a maximum power rating of 5 MWth. The reactor was commissioned on September 16, 1957 and achieved its first criticality. Although designed to operate at 5 MW the reactor operated only at 2 MW during the early sixties and mid-eighties on an operational cycle of 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. It is currently operating at 3.5 MWth with a 64-hour cycle per week. The reactor is operated and maintained by the Research Reactor Center at IPEN, São Paulo, which is also responsible for irradiation and other services.

The IEA-R1 reactor is a multidisciplinary facility and is being used extensively for basic and applied research in nuclear and neutron related sciences and engineering. The reactor has also been used for training, for producing some useful radioisotopes with applications in nuclear medicine and industry, and for miscellaneous irradiation services. Several departments of IPEN routinely use the reactor for their research and development work. Many scientists and students at universities and other research institutions in Brazil also use it quite often for academic and technological research.

During the past few years, a concerted effort has been made to refurbish and modernize the reactor systems and components in order to extend its working life and upgrade the reactor power to 5 MWth. One of the reasons for this decision was to produce some of the important radioisotopes such as 99Mo and 131I among several others locally, to minimize the importation cost. The reactor cycle will be gradually increased to 120 hours per week continuous operation.

2. Objective:

The “International Workshop on Research Reactor Utilization” we believe will serve to further stimulate students and research members of universities and other research institutions in Brazil to participate in the research and teaching programs utilizing the IEA-R1 reactor as a neutron source. Quite significant as the date of the workshop may be in its own right to “commemorate the 50th anniversary of the IEA-R1 Research Reactor” its main objective is to draw attention of scientific community in Brazil that the nuclear reactor is a singular installation which may be used in multidisciplinary basic and applied research in nuclear science and engineering. The presentations by invited speakers will demonstrate the wide applications of reactor utilization in R&D work. It is expected that an open discussions on the present status and future of RR utilization in basic and applied science and engineering will prompt many young new students to understand the advantages of the multidisciplinary aspect of the nuclear reactor facilities.

3. Scope

The workshop will address some of the topics related to the Research Reactors (RR) utilization in basic and applied research in nuclear and neutron related sciences. Sessions are expected to include presentations from the invited international and Brazilian experts on the following subjects:

  • Neutron Activation Analysis;
  • Nuclear and Neutron Metrology;
  • Solid State Physics (Hyperfine Interactions / Neutron Scattering & Diffraction);
  • Nuclear Physics using Nuclear Reactors / Nuclear Data;
  • Other Nuclear Reactor Applications (Neutron radiography/BNCT)

4. Programme Structure:

The workshop will consist of an opening session and of technical sessions with presentations from the invited experts, poster sessions and a session for open discussion where participants with poster presentations will have an opportunity to discuss their work with the others.

5. Proceedings:

Abstracts and power point presentations (oral and poster) will be distributed to the participants of the workshop in a CD-ROM

6. Invited Speakers: (click on the name to see abstract)

7. Preliminary programe:

8. Working language:

The working language of the workshop will be English.

9. Useful Information:

- Accomodation & Local Transportation:
The hotel reservation is confirmed. We have reserved single room accommodation, including breakfast, for all the foreign participants and some Brazilian participants.
The hotel is:

HOWARD JOHNSON FARIA LIMA INN
Rua Tavares Cabral, 61 - Pinheiros, Tel.: 55-11-3032-2400

Is located about 4 Km from IPEN and has easy access to shopping centers and a variety of restaurants and pubs.
The transport from the hotel to IPEN has been arranged and a mini bus will leave hotel at about 8:00 The return to hotel between 17:30 and 18:00 on all days.
Since the arrivals of the participants to São Paulo airport (Guarulhos) are at widely different times (between 7:30 and 20:30) and days (2nd, 3rd and 4th December)we suggest that you take a taxi which can be hired from the kiosk "guarucoop" situated just before the exit of airport terminal. The taxi fare is about R$100,00(US$55,00) to the hotel and can be paid at the kiosk by cash or credit card. The taxi company has been instructed to receive you, when you step out of the customs, with a plaque bearing your name. In case you don't see any one when you come out, just go to the taxi kiosk your self (one min. walking distance) and ask for the assistance (they speak English).
Pay for the taxi. We will reimburse you. Ask for the receipt of the taxi fare.

- Visa: Check with your local authorities if you may need a visa; please contact us if you need an official invitation letter.

- International Transportation: Each of the invited speakers should have been contacted by the organizing committee by now to work out the details of the international transportation; if you haven't, please contact us shortly so that we can make the proper arrangements in time; in any case, it is essential that you bring us a receipt of your air ticket so that we are able to refund the expenses.

- Weather: In december the temperatures in Sao Paulo are quite high, with maximum temperatures usually around 25-33 Celsius and minumum temperatures around 20-22 Celsius; be prepared for some rain, specially in the afternoon.

- Please feel free to contact the organizing committee if you have any further questions or inquiries.

10. Participation & Registration

The workshop is open to the participation of interested students or researchers with interesting work in the areas related to the scope of the Workshop. Participants are expected to present a poster (to be printed by the organization) with their work in the field.

The registration is free of charge, and those interested in participating must send an abstract of the poster they intend to present (approximately 200 words) to the conference e-mail address at iear150y@gmail.com until November 23.

Due to the proximity of the workshop, we kindly ask those interested in participating to send also the complete poster, until NO LATER THAN MONDAY, 26/11/2007. The poster must be 90cm wide, 100cm high and should be sent in CorelDraw format, if possible; however, as this is not a very common format, PowerPoint files shall also be accepted, but in that case we'd kindly ask you to send the posters as soon as possible to give us enough time for the file format conversion.
